How can a Librarian Help?

Librarian help with Scoping or Systematic reviews falls into two categories.

Level 1- Consult

Help with topic development to include guidance on process and steps initial searching.

Developing of Eligibility Criteria: Development and refinement of topic, PICOT development, 

Protocol creation and Registration: Guidance

Searching: Identification of appropriate databases, instruction on search techniques and methods, some training on citation management software. 

Writing and Publishing: Suggestions of journals to target publication.

Level 2- Research Partner/ Co-Author

All of the above in Level 1 and...

Searching: Development and execution of advanced searches, downloading of results to citation management software and help with removing duplicates, documentation of search strategy, management of search results.

Writing and Publishing: Drafting of literature search description in "methods" section, Creation of PRISMA diagram, drafting of literature search appendix, Review other manuscript sections and final draft.

Please follow this link to access the PRISMA 2020 checklist, statement, flow diagram template and information. Please note that you may also need to identify extensions such as PRISMA for Scoping reviews that should also be followed depending on your project. 

How do I evaluate a website for content?

  1. Sponsor? - 
    1. Can you identify who sponsors the cite?
    2. Are they reputable such as a university, government or reputable organizations?
    3. What is the motivation for the information? selling products, political or promoting a cause?
  2. Last updated? date or revision or publication is often on the bottom of the page.
  3. Facts or opinion? information should be clear, and fact based. information should be verifiable in professional publications. Opinions should be clearly stated with the source visible. Check that this source is qualified.
  4. Audience? Many health websites have areas of the cite for public and another for professionals.
